Dinamo Riga continues their road trip this time facing off against their nemesis - CSKA Moscow. Riga and Moscow side have seen each other 35 times and latvian side has come on top only in six situations. Both teams came into the game following a loss in the opening games of the season. CSKA lost 0:3 against Avangard, while Riga lost 2:3 against Lokomotiv. For Dinamo it is the second of a three game road trip. For the visiting side CSKA has always been a hard opponent - last season Dinamo earned their first victory after a 10-year drought when they couldn’t manage to beat the opponent.

In the first period both sides played careful hockey. CSKA and Riga had time on man advantage but neither side could take advantage of it. Scoreless after one. CSKA began the second period with yet another penalty when Nikita Nesterov cross-checked his opponent which gave Riga a chance to open up the score, however, they couldn’t manage to cease the opportunity.

Riga answered right back with a too many men penalty and that gave them a one goal lead - Nesterov and Grigorenko duo created the opportunity, two quick passes between both of them and then a bullet by the latter that went past the goalie, 1:0.

The story of special teams carried over for Dinamo, their powerplay was spectacular against Lokomotiv and now against CSKA team captain Lauris Darzins found Jelisejevs stick in front of the net and it was tapped in to tie the game. Guest side was able to celebrate once again, Emile Poirier sent Hunter Shinkaruk on a break-away with a quick but precise pass and the Canadian forward capitalised on that to give Riga a 2:1 lead, which was their first goal of the season at full strength. Score remained the same as the period ended. The goal scorer stated that the pass couldn’t have been better - “It was a great pass, it was easy for me to get the goal” also pointing out that the team has to finish their chances in a better manner.

At the beginning of the third period Riga continued to impress, applying pressure and controlling the game, showing that they aren’t going to keep the score but instead attempt to score more. Ralfs Freibergs got penalised with 12 minutes left on the clock and Anton Slepyshev only needed seven seconds to score the equalizer, a quick face-off win Nesterov quickly found the goal scorer who stood at the right face-off dot for a perfect one-timer. After the goal the game slowed down, none of the both teams wanted to take any risks that would cost them the game. Late in the period Riga had their shot to clinch the game but CSKA responded with a shorthanded goal - Sergei Andronov beat Mattsson with a wrister that went into the far side of the net and granted his team a victory, 3:2 the final score.

Post game Shinkaruk wasn’t happy with the results, but knew that it’s just the begging: ”For the most part we played a good game, stuck to your system but didn’t close the game out. We gotta finish the game better.” When asked if it’s hard to begin the season on road he didn’t resist to say that it’s actually a good thing “Its not too bad, I was here in Moscow before while playing in KHL, I know the place well. You get get to get get familiar with the guys.”
