Dinamo Riga went on to play on the road for the second time this season. In the road trip opener they had to face-off against Moscow Spartak side - a team that has great offence and it was clear that the visitors would have to keep their defensive walls tight in order to fight for two points in the standings. This was also an opportunity for Dinamo to earn their third victory in a row, something that they haven’t accomplished since February of 2019. Meanwhile Spartak have been off to a good start winning the first three games of the season, then losing two games against big boys SKA and CSKA.

‘’We just couldn’t capitalise on our opportunities’’, Dinamo’s only goal-scorer Nikita Jelisejevs said after the game. He has played a large role with the team this season and admitted that he really enjoys it. When asked what are the positives that can be carried over into the next game against Dynamo Moscow he had a short answer that summarized just about the only thing that worked well for his team: ‘’Our penalty kill, that it.’’

The game began with careful hockey, both sides scouted out their opponent to see what kind of hockey would be played. Not many scoring chances on either side in the first half of the first period, shots on goal were 4:2 in favour for the guests. Shortly after Emil Pettersson was sent to the penalty box for holding and Riga’s spectacular power-play gave them a 1:0 lead. Radil with the shot that bounced off of Alexei Krasikov’s pad and Nikolajs Jelisejevs cashed in on it.

Jori Lehtera equalised the score just a little over a minute later with a quick shot from in front of the net, Emil Pettersson with the primary assist taking the weight off of his shoulders for the penalty that cost his team a goal. After some altercations on the ice Ivan Drozdov and Emile Poirier got four minutes each for roughing. Score remained the same as the time ran out showing a tie twenty minutes in.

Spartak came out ready and needed only a minute and fourteen seconds to get themselves their first lead of the game - Alexander Khokhlachyov was the goal scorer. Dinamo kept having issues to start the second period, Patriks Zabusovs was sent to the box for holding but luckily for them the penalty was successfully killed. Lukas Radil had an incredible opportunity to level the score while left all alone in close range but Krasikov was in his place to make the save.

Spartak once again poured cold water over Dinamo’s head - Maxim Tysplakov squeezed through two Dinamo defenders and put the puck past Mattsson. The visiting side received yet another shot at man advantage but that was short lived as Brandom Gormley was forced to break the rules in order to prevent a dangerous breakaway on his team's net. Undisciplined hockey in the middle frame with seven penalties taken and a two-goal lead for the home side.

If the first two periods showed a variety of entertaining hockey - the start of the third didn’t bring much action, many whistles and loads of hockey along the boards without anything much happening near the net. Once the scoring chances came, most if not all of them belonged to Spartak. First real scare for the home team came while short-handed, Riga moved the puck well and Radil shot at an empty corner, however the goalie moved in time to catch the puck keeping Riga on their toes. Mattsson was pulled in a timely manner in order to bring six players on the ice in an attempt to chase down the score. Spartak held on to their lead to earn a convincing 3:1 victory.

Sergei Zubov didn’t criticise his team but as always kept things simple when talking about the game: ‘’I could say that in the second period we didn’t play well but I don’t want to. I want to congratulate our opponent with the victory, they created their opportunities and scored on them, we couldn’t manage to do that.’’
