Both of these teams are out of playoff contention, but both had something to play for here. Dinamo was going for a third successive win, something it hasn’t achieved all season. Admiral, meanwhile, was looking to defeat the Latvians on home ice for the first time since 2013.
Admiral also had to contend with injuries and illness, limiting its options on the roster. But the home team still seized the initiative in a goalless first period before finally getting in front late in the second. Shawn Lalonde’s excellent long-range pass set up Nikita Korostelyov to open the scoring.
The final stanza began with another eye-catching assist as Markus Ljungh set up Denis Vikharev to make it 2-0. Proceedings were further enlivened by a couple of fights – Gimayev vs Osipov followed by Gillies vs Lalonde – before Carter Ashton put Riga back in the game with six minutes left. But hopes of a fightback were extinguished when a breakdown in the Admiral zone enabled Ljungh to score into the empty net and seal the win.
